BugQuest aims to make scientific research more accessible and engage local and school communities in learning about biodiversity research and conservation.

This page provides lesson plans, educational comics, and an insect identification key created by the BugQuest Team and our collaborators to support learning and exploration.

Lesson Plans

BugQuest has partnered with EcoSchools Canada to create lesson plans that educators may use to connect their school’s participation in BugQuest to relevant curriculum expectations! Lesson plans are available for both elementary and high school levels.

Check out our comic series “Buggy McFly Explains” to learn more about how DNA barcoding works, from the field to the lab! Written and illustrated by members of the BugQuest team, Sam Schmidtke and Sam Welsh.

Insect Key

An insect key is a tool used to help identify an unknown insect.

This key is part of insect diversity teaching materials used at the University of Guelph, originally produced in collaboration with Dr. Andrew D. Young and illustrated by a member of our BugQuest Team, Sam Schmidtke.
