In the meantime, you can explore past materials from our earlier School Malaise Trap Program, which offer helpful background information on trap setup, sample collection, and classroom activities while we finish preparing the new BugQuest toolkit.
what is in a
Quest Kit?
- 1 Malaise trap – a tent-like structure that passively collects bugs
- Pre-labelled 500ml plastic bottles filled with saltwater preservative – one for each week of collection
- Instruction Manual and Collection Log Sheet
- Materials for return shipping

how do i collect, store, and ship
Bug Bottles?
- Every week, return to the trap and simply change out the collection bottle.
- To protect the DNA in the catch, the bottles need to be stored in a refrigerator until the time of shipment.
- Keep track of the bottles collected using the Log Sheet.
- Once you have a batch of 8 bottles, or the collecting season is over, use the provided box and courier stickers in the kit to ship them to CBG.
