Establish Biodiversity Baselines
We cannot protect what we do not know or understand, and many regions of our planet lack comprehensive biodiversity knowledge. We can use your help! Get involved in the BIOSCAN program by sampling the arthropod community in your region using the standard sampling kit and protocols we provide.
By filling in these blanks and expanding our knowledge of life on our planet, BIOSCAN will help farmers, miners, and other industries better measure and regulate their impact on the environment. Our work will lay the foundation for a global biosurveillance system, allowing us to track shifts in biodiversity patterns like how we already report the weather.
BugQuest is a nation-wide initiative to sample insects at hundreds of sites across Canada starting in 2026 and identify them using DNA barcoding. It connects schools and communities in an exciting mission to uncover and monitor Canada’s insect biodiversity. By joining the quest, participants help reveal the hidden species in their own schoolyards – and, by continuing their BugQuest in future seasons, build a lasting record of change over time.
