Biodiversity<\/span> \u2013<\/span> short for biological diversity<\/span> \u2013<\/span> describes <\/span>the variety of life <\/span>on Earth and the relationships <\/span>among<\/span> living organisms<\/span>.\u00a0 <\/span>It<\/span> includes diversity <\/span>within<\/span> individuals (genetic variation), <\/span>the number of species,<\/span> and <\/span>the <\/span>di<\/span>fferent types<\/span> o<\/span>f <\/span>ecosystems<\/span>.<\/span><\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t

Genetic diversity<\/strong> refers to the variety of genes within a species. Genes are passed from parents to their young and act like instructions that determine how an individual looks and works. When a species has lots of genetic diversity, it\u2019s better able to adapt to changes in the environment, which helps it survive over time.<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t

Species diversity<\/strong> is the type of diversity we talk about most often. It means the variety of different species living in one area. Places with lots of species are usually healthier than places with only a few. For example, a wild meadow filled with many kinds of plants and insects is much more diverse than a wheat field with just one crop, but not all kinds of biodiversity are as easy to spot with your eyes.<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t

\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\tCommunity and ecosystem diversity<\/strong> refers to the variety of ecosystems \u2013 like forests, wetlands, grasslands, and more \u2013 and all the living things that belong to them. Scientists often compare different sites to see which have higher or lower levels of diversity. Biodiversity gives us clean air, safe water, food, and even medicines. We <\/span>measure lots of things in nature<\/span> \u2013 <\/span>like recording t<\/span>em<\/span>perature, wind speed, and trying to predict the weather.<\/span> But biodiversity is trickier because there <\/span>isn\u2019t<\/span> one simple number that tells us how healthy an ecosystem is. <\/span>That\u2019s<\/span> where insects come in!<\/span> Bugs mak<\/span>e <\/span>great<\/span> \u2018biodiversity indicators\u2019 <\/span>because they react quickly to changes in the environment, they live <\/span>almost everywhere<\/span>, there are tons of <\/span>different kinds<\/span>, and <\/span>they\u2019re<\/span> easy for scientists to collect and study<\/span>.<\/span> By keeping track of insects, we can learn a lot about how the whole ecosystem is doing.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t

There <\/span>isn\u2019t<\/span> just one way to measure biodiversity<\/span>, <\/span>so<\/span> scientists <\/span>use <\/span>several <\/span>method<\/span>s<\/span>. <\/span>S<\/span>cientists <\/span>agree that more than one measurement is necessary to gain <\/span>an accurate<\/span> picture of <\/span>diversity<\/span> within an area. <\/span>Two common measurements are species richness (how many <\/span>different species<\/span> are present) and species evenness (how evenly those species are represented). Scientists often combine these measurements into a biodiversity index \u2013 a single number that makes it easier to compare <\/span>different places<\/span>.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t

Species Richness<\/strong> is<\/span> a<\/span> quick way to\u00a0<\/span>compare<\/span> different locations<\/span>. <\/span>It simply counts how many <\/span>different species<\/span> live in a place. <\/span>It\u2019s<\/span> easy to understand, but it <\/span>doesn\u2019t<\/span> tell us how many individuals of each species are there.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t

Species evenness<\/strong> looks at how those individuals are spread out among the species in an area. A place might have lots of animals and seem diverse, but 99% of them belong to the same species, and it <\/span>isn\u2019t<\/span> very diverse<\/span> at all.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t

The Simpson Index<\/strong> is a more detailed measurement that combines species richness and species evenness into one number. The scale goes from 0 to 1, where 0 means high biodiversity and 1 means low biodiversity.<\/span> Scientists<\/span> can use this number to <\/span>compare <\/span>the biodiversity<\/span> between <\/span>different sites<\/span>.<\/span><\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t
